Savita Punia Achieves 300 International Caps, Joins Elite Club as Hockey India Celebrates Milestone

By MyKhel Staff

Hockey India extended heartfelt congratulations to Indian women's hockey team goalkeeper Savita Punia for reaching the remarkable milestone of 300 international matches. The veteran shot-stopper achieved this feat during India's clash against the Netherlands in the ongoing FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

By accomplishing this landmark, Savita joins Vandana Katariya as only the second Indian woman to play 300 international matches. Additionally, she is just the second Indian goalkeeper-across both men's and women's teams-to achieve this distinction, following in the footsteps of the legendary PR Sreejesh.

Savita Punia

A Pillar of Indian Hockey

Since making her senior debut at 20, Savita has become one of the most formidable goalkeepers in international hockey. Her performances were instrumental in India's historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics, a campaign that brought global recognition to the team. She was also a key member of the squad at the Rio 2016 Olympics and played a vital role in India's quarter-final run at the 2018 Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup.

A Leader Who Inspires

As captain, Savita has steered India to several notable victories, including a bronze medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and a triumphant campaign at the FIH Nations Cup. Under her leadership, the team secured back-to-back gold medals in the Women's Asian Champions Trophy in 2023 and 2024.

Her exceptional contributions to Indian hockey have earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious Arjuna Award. She has also been honored twice with the Hockey India Balbir Singh Senior Award for Player of the Year (2022, 2023). Notably, her brilliance in goalkeeping has been recognized on the global stage, as she clinched the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year award for three consecutive seasons (2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23).

A Moment of Pride

Reflecting on her milestone, an emotional Savita said, "Playing 300 matches for India is an incredibly special moment for me. It has been an unforgettable journey. I am deeply grateful to Hockey India, Sports Authority of India, my family, teammates, and support staff who have stood by me throughout. Every match wearing the Indian jersey is an honour, and I will continue to give my best for the team."

Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey lauded her contribution, stating, "Savita has been the backbone of Indian hockey for years, and reaching 300 caps is a testament to her dedication and skill. She has been a true leader and an inspiration to young players, especially goalkeepers looking to follow in her footsteps."

Echoing similar sentiments, Hockey India Secretary General Shri Bhola Nath Singh remarked, "We are extremely proud of Savita's achievement. Her leadership and performances have been instrumental in India's rise on the world stage, and I have no doubt she will continue to steer the team to greater heights."

With her unwavering commitment and stellar performances, Savita Punia remains a beacon of inspiration for aspiring hockey players in India. As she continues her journey, she not only cements her place as one of the sport's greats but also strengthens India's position in global hockey.
