HIL: Sofie Gierts Lauds Fearless Young Indian Hockey Talent Ahead Of SG Pipers Season

SG Pipers head coach Sofie Gierts commends the fearless, instinctive play of rising Indian talents such as Ishika and Sunelita Toppo. She highlights their creativity and potential, emphasising the right environment and support to help them reach high levels, as the team prepares for the season opener against Ranchi Royals.

SG Pipers head coach Sofie Gierts has highlighted the fearless approach of young Indian players in the squad, calling their natural skill and mindset a key strength as the team prepares for its opening match against Ranchi Royals on December 28 in the upcoming season.

The squad is currently in early training in Ranchi, where Sofie and the support staff are trying to build on-field understanding between Indian youngsters, established international names and Olympic medallists, aiming to create a balanced unit that can compete strongly from the first game.

Sofie Gierts praises fearless Indian talent

Reflecting on the initial sessions, Sofie spoke about rising domestic talents such as Ishika and Sunelita Toppo. The coach noted how quickly these players have drawn notice through confident body language, sharp decision making and a willingness to express themselves with the ball under pressure.

Sofie said the players, "play without fear. The technique is there, the instincts are there, and most importantly, they are not afraid to try things. That is something very special." The coach views this attitude as an important advantage during high-pressure phases of matches.

A former Belgian international for more than ten years, and one of the few women to coach a men’s team at elite level, Sofie believes Indian hockey players bring a distinct identity to any squad because of their attacking mindset and natural flair on the ball.

She explained that "there is a spontaneity and creativity in their hockey. You don't want to take that away. You want to add structure around it so they can repeat those actions consistently at the highest level." The staff is focusing on systems without limiting individual flair.

SG Pipers preparations and long-term view from Sofie Gierts

While current efforts centre on building combinations and tactical clarity, Sofie has also stressed the bigger picture for the franchise. The coach believes that if the support system is stable, this group of players can develop significantly over the coming years.

She added that "if you give these players the right environment, the right support, and time, they can go very far." The club’s approach this season therefore links immediate performance goals with long-term development plans for the younger Indian group.

As part of that framework, SG Pipers are trying to blend experience and youth before facing Ranchi Royals on December 28. The following table summarises key match details mentioned so far.
