Will a Bharat Ratna add anything to immortal legacy of Dhyan Chand?

By Indranil Basu

Honouring Major Dhyan Chand with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, has been a topic of discussion for many years. While his legendary status in Indian sports is unquestionable, the debate over whether he should receive the Bharat Ratna reflects broader issues about how we recognize and celebrate excellence.

Dhyan Chand's three Olympic gold medals in hockey, won between 1928 and 1936, are a testament to his unparalleled skill and the dominance of Indian hockey during that era. His contributions to the sport have not only brought glory to India but also inspired generations of athletes.

However, the Bharat Ratna has traditionally been awarded to individuals for their contributions beyond just sporting achievements, often recognising those who have had a profound impact on society as a whole.

In contrast, the recent achievements of Neeraj Chopra and Abhinav Bindra, who secured individual gold medals in the Olympics, highlight the challenges faced by Indian athletes on the global stage. These achievements are monumental, particularly in a country where infrastructure and support for sports other than cricket have historically been limited.

"It doesn't matter who is saying what about the highest recognition. It's about everyone knowing the legacy of an ultimate athlete this country has seen," Ashok Kumar told MyKhel while sitting in the same room that celebrated those big moments in the late twenties and early thirties.

Ashok Kumar then said that the value of medals, like those won by Dhyan Chand, is indeed priceless. They symbolise the hard work, dedication, and national pride that athletes bring to their pursuits.

However, the intent to honor these achievements must come from a place of genuine appreciation, not just as a means of rectifying past oversights. "The world declared it first that my father was a magician and that is the biggest tag one can achieve as an athlete," Dhyan Chand's son Ashok Kumar said.

In the end, whether or not Dhyan Chand receives the Bharat Ratna, his legacy as a sporting icon will endure. What matters more is the continued recognition and support for athletes across all sports, ensuring that their contributions to the nation are valued, celebrated, and remembered. The Bharat Ratna would be a fitting tribute to his legacy, but even without it, Dhyan Chand's place in Indian sports history remains untouchable.

Even his home in Jhansi still lends strong vibes of his presence through memories. "There is nothing more pleasing than remembering those golden days. As long as India is there, his name would be reverberating all cross the country," Ashok Kumar said.

The sentiment captures the complexity and emotional depth of the debate surrounding Major Dhyan Chand and the Bharat Ratna. Dhyan Chand's legacy as an unparalleled figure in Indian sports, often referred to as the "Hockey Wizard," is beyond question. His contributions to India's sporting history are so monumental that they have become synonymous with excellence and national pride.

The decision to award Sachin Tendulkar the Bharat Ratna in 2014, while well-deserved given his remarkable contributions to cricket, did spark a debate. Many felt that honoring Tendulkar before Dhyan Chand, who had been a candidate for the award for many years, was a missed opportunity to recognize the foundational impact of Dhyan Chand on Indian sports.

Some argue that this decision reflected a broader trend of favoring contemporary figures over historical legends whose achievements, though equally significant, belong to a different era. Indeed, the passage of time has shifted the public discourse. While Dhyan Chand's admirers and sports historians continue to champion his legacy, the urgency of the Bharat Ratna debate has waned.

This could be due to the realization that an award, no matter how prestigious, cannot add to or diminish Dhyan Chand's already monumental legacy. His influence on Indian sport is so deeply ingrained that it transcends formal recognition. In a country with a rich sporting history, where the struggle for recognition often mirrors broader societal issues, the case of Dhyan Chand serves as a reminder of the importance of honouring our heroes.

Even those who hold Dhyan Chand in the highest regard seem to have moved on, perhaps because they recognize that his legacy is secure - with or without the Bharat Ratna. Ultimately, the debate throws light on the evolving nature of how we value and remember our sporting icons. Dhyan Chand's contributions are immortalized not just in records and medals but in the very spirit of Indian sportsmanship. Whether or not he receives the Bharat Ratna, his name will continue to inspire future generations, a true testament to the power of his legacy.
