Highlight of the day: India vs Malaysia: 4-0

Defending champions India began their Women's Asian Champions Trophy campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory over Malaysia in Rajgir on Monday, November 11. Young striker Sangita Kumari starred for the hosts, scoring twice to lead India to a dominant win.

India set the tone early in the match with an eighth-minute goal from Sangita, who capitalized on a penalty corner variation. Despite their dominance in possession, India failed to convert multiple penalty corners, but the hosts were resolute in their attacks.

Preeti Dubey had a couple of near misses, with her close-range attempt saved and another shot hitting the side post. Malaysia, on the other hand, squandered their early penalty corner opportunity in the fifth minute.

The second quarter saw India continue to press forward, but they could not extend their lead, with several penalty corners going unconverted. However, India remained in control, and their defense, led by goalkeeper Savita Punia, stood firm against Malaysia's limited counter-attacks.

In the second half, India doubled their lead with Preeti Dubey scoring in the 43rd minute, deflecting a flick from Navneet Kaur off a penalty corner. Udita added a third goal just a minute later with a powerful slap shot.

Five minutes before the final whistle, Sangita completed her brace with a brilliant backhander after a swift run past Malaysian defenders. India's victory came on the back of a commanding performance, earning 17 penalty corners and conceding just two.

The hosts will now turn their attention to their next match against South Korea on Tuesday. The victory in front of a passionate home crowd sets a confident tone for India's title defense at the tournament.
