Women's FIH Olympic Qualifiers: Inspired USA Stun India 1-0 In Pool A; Abigail Tamer Scores Solitary Goal

By Subhashish Sarkar

The Indian women's hockey team didn't have the ideal start they wanted, as they lost 1-0 against the 15-ranked USA in the Pool B game of the Women's FIH Olympics Qualifiers 2024 at the Jaipal Singh Stadium in Ranchi.

Abigail Tamer's goal in the second quarter's first minute is what sets the two teams apart. Thanks to this goal and some excellent saves by keeper Kelsey Bing, the Americans have started off with a win in Ranchi.

After letting in a goal, the Indian team fought hard and almost scored a tying goal in the third quarter. However, the goal was canceled after a review. Neither we nor any Indian fan would have thought that India would lose this match but the American team numbed the crowd sitting in the stadium.

The USA has now made Group B interesting, and now India must defeat New Zealand and Italy by a significant margin while also hoping for the US to lose some points. India continued to struggle with penalty corners, missing six opportunities. Facing a strong New Zealand team, India needs to win their Sunday match. If they don't, their journey may come to an end at the Women's FIH Olympics Qualifiers 2024.

The top three hockey teams in the eight-nation tournament will secure a place at the Paris 2024 Olympics taking place in July and August in France. Teams that finish in the top two in each pool (A and B) will advance to the semi-finals.

The Indian women's hockey team beat the USA in the 2019 FIH Hockey Olympic qualifiers. Now, they wanted to win again, but the USA, led by head coach Davis Passmore, had different plans and defeated India on their home turf.

After the victory, Kelsey Bing, named player of the match, shares her thoughts: "I experienced a heartbreaker four years ago. It's great to be back and happy with the win."

The Indian women's hockey team is set to play against New Zealand in their second match on Sunday (14 Janaury).
