Kim Lammers scored twice (fourth and 43rd minute) in the match as Japan were handed their second straight defeat. For Netherlands, it was their second successive win after having blanked Belgium 3-0 at the Riverbank Arena.
After Netherlands had raced away to a 3-0 lead, Japan started to claw way into the match. Riko Komazawa scored in the 45th minute and later Aki Mitsuhashi made it 2-3 in 52nd minute.
Lammers took her goal tally in the tournament to four. The other goal for Netherlands was scored by Ellen Hoog (30th minute).
"We are satisfied with the two wins and six points, but today we were not very good so we have things we can work on. We were not playing together and as a team, and we were not very sharp," Hoog was quoted as saying to the media.
Komazawa said, "The tactic in the first half was to be solid in defence because Holland are stronger. We were too defencive though and should have attacked more."
In other matches on Tuesday, New Zealand thrashed South Africa 4-1 for their second win. China and Belgium were involved in a goalless draw.
Great Britain outplayed South Korea 5-3 while USA upset Argentina 1-0. Australia, after their loss to New Zealand, bounced back to beat Germany 3-1.
