WSH: Chennai win, move to second spot

Bangalore, Mar 18: Chennai Cheetahs scored in each of the four quarters to thrash Karnataka Lions 4-1 in their World Series Hockey (WSH) match and jump to the second spot in the points table, here on Saturday.

With this win, Chennai now are joint second with Bhopal Badshahs with 13 points while Karnataka remained at bottom of the eight-team table with nine points.

Vikram Pillay (13), Imran Warsi (33), Adam Sinclair (43) and S Shivamani (68) scored a goal each in Karnataka's victory. It could have been a brace of field goals for Sinclair but his strike in the fourth quarter was disallowed.

Vinayak Bijwad (37) scored the only goal for the hosts. Chennai could conceded goals in the first half but thanks to brilliant saves made by its custodian Santosh, the visitors survived.

Pillay put Chennai ahead when he converted a penalty stroke in the 13th minute. Pakistani import Imran Varsi then converted penalty corner in the dying minutes of the second quarter to double the lead.

Karnataka goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan, who actually did a fantastic job for his side, could not stop that fierce and accurate shot from Warsi.

Two minutes later, Bangalore got a chance to comeback in the side and Vinayak found the net after his teammates had almost blew away the penalty corner chance.

Adam Sinclair made it 3-1 for Chennai when he dribbled past Karnataka defenders and his reverse shot sounded the board in the 43th minute.

S Shivamani completed the tally for his side with his brilliant field goal with two minutes into the hooter.

Sher-e-Punjab beat Bhopal Badshahs 4-3

In Jalandhar, Sher-e-Punjab on Saturday notched their sixth win in the World Series Hockey, beating Bhopal Badshahs 4-3 at the Surjeet Singh Hockey Stadium here. It was two wins in two days for Punjab.

On Friday, star frontliner Deepak Thakur had scored a hat-trick as Sher-E-Punjab notched up a 5-2 victory over Chandigarh Comets.

The Punjab outfit dominated the proceedings for most part of the match scoring through Thakur (25th, 57th and 60th minute), VS Vinay (31st) and Harpreet Singh (35th).

Comets scored through Sher Singh (56th minute) and Robert Green (70th) at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium.

Inderjit Singh (35), Mandeep Antil (41), Gagan Ajit Singh (42) and Matthew Hotchkis (57) struck for the winners while Casey Henwood (46), Lalit Kumar Upadhyay (66) and Shailendra Singh Bundela (68) scored for the visitors.

In an exciting match, Inderjit gave Punjab the lead by scoring through penalty corner before Antil made it 2-0 in favour of the hosts.

More agony was in store for Bhopal as Gagan Ajit struck Punjab's third a minute later. Henwood reduced the margin for the visitors before Hotchkis made it 4-1.

Bhopal tried to make a comeback late into the match through Upadhyay and Bundela's strikes, but their efforts were not enough.

The home team comfortably led 4-1 midway through the third quarter, but had to work hard to safeguard their citadel to end the day with a narrow win.

Never the ones to give up, the Badshahs stuck twice in the last two minutes, but a draw remained a distant dream for the visitors.

On Friday, India discard Arjun Halappa led from the front in brilliant fashion, scoring a brace of goals and assisting in the third as cellar outfit Karnataka Lions whipped Mumbai Marines 4-2 in a fast-paced clash at the MHA-Mahindra Stadium in Mumbai on Friday.
