In late 2016, he began to suffer from persistent back pain. This issue disrupted his training in 2019, forcing him to focus on rehabilitation instead of competing internationally. Despite these setbacks, he remained determined to return to top form.
His perseverance paid off at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. He increased his career Paralympic medal tally to six, making him the most decorated boccia player from the Republic of Korea. He also holds the record for the most Paralympic gold medals in boccia for his country, with three golds to his name.
One of his most memorable achievements came at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. There, he won gold in the individual BC3 event. This victory remains a highlight of his illustrious career.
His contributions to boccia have not gone unnoticed. In 2010, he received the Cheongnyong Medal, the highest Order of Sport Merit in the Republic of Korea. In 2017, he was named Person with an Impairment of the Year by the Korea Disabled People's Development Institute.
At the closing ceremony of the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, he and his BC3 mixed pairs teammates Kim Han-Soo and Choi Ye-Jin had the honour of being flag bearers for their country. This recognition highlighted their achievements and contributions to Korean sports.
