Ilham Zakiyev Biography

He became the first judoka from Azerbaijan to win a medal at the Paralympic Games, securing gold in the +100kg category at the 2004 Athens Games. He repeated this feat in Beijing in 2008, becoming the first Azerbaijani athlete to win two gold medals at the Paralympic Games.

In 2012, he won a bronze medal in London, followed by another bronze in Tokyo in 2020. This achievement made him the first Azerbaijani athlete to win medals at four separate editions of the Paralympic Games.

Injuries and Recovery

In February 2020, he tore a ligament in his foot during a training camp with the national team. Later that year, he underwent surgery for an injury to his right elbow. Despite these setbacks, he resumed training in early 2021.

Awards and Recognition

His accomplishments have earned him numerous accolades. He received the Order for Service to the Fatherland [first class] for his bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. For his bronze medal at the London 2012 Games, he was awarded the Taraggi [Progress] Medal.

In 2021, on the 25th anniversary of the National Paralympic Committee of Azerbaijan, he received the Order for Service to the Fatherland [third class]. In 2019, he was honoured with the title of Honoured Coach of Azerbaijan by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

He has served as vice president of the National Paralympic Committee of Azerbaijan. He aims to encourage injured veterans to take up Para sports. He believes that sport helps individuals integrate into society and achieve success.

Future Ambitions

Looking ahead, he aims to win gold at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. He plans to make a final decision about his career after Paris. If a young judoka defeats him, he will consider ending his career.
