Juan Yao Biography

She made her debut for China at the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Over the years, she has faced several injuries but has always bounced back. In the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, she suffered an elbow injury. Another elbow injury occurred while preparing for the 2008 Games in Beijing.

Injuries and Comebacks

Despite these setbacks, she continued to excel. She sustained a waist injury during training for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. More recently, a knee injury disrupted her training ahead of the 2023 World Championships in Paris, France. However, she went on to win two gold medals at that tournament.

Education and Coaching

She graduated with a degree in Physical Education from Nanjing Normal University in China. Currently, she is self-coached and represents Jiangsu Province. Her first coach, Wang Shunlin, has been a significant influence on her career.

Personal Interests and Philosophy

Apart from sports, she enjoys singing, playing basketball, and billiards. Her sporting hero is US basketballer Kobe Bryant. She lives by the philosophy: "Work hard until you can give no more, fight hard to improve yourself."

Her achievements have been recognised with several awards. She has received the National March 8th Red Banner Pace-Setter award and the National May 4th Youth Medal in China. Additionally, she was presented with the National May 1st Labour Medal by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.
