PKL: From clinching gold with India on the mat to shaping future stars from the sidelines, Naveen Kumar brings a wealth of experience to his new role as head coach of the Bengal Warriorz.
The Haryana-born kabaddi stalwart, a former international who triumphed at the Asian Games, South Asian Games, and Kabaddi World Cup, now shoulders the responsibility of rebuilding the Warriorz after a tough PKL Season 11, where they finished 10th.

But this is no unfamiliar territory for Naveen. Having coached domestic and institutional sides like the Indian Navy and the Sports Authority of India teams, he's known for his tactical acumen, discipline, and ability to nurture young talent. As Bengal Warriorz aim for redemption and long-term success, Naveen's appointment signals a fresh start.
In an exclusive interview with myKhel, the new head coach opens up about his coaching philosophy, player development plans, and his vision to take the 2019 champions back to the top.
1) What made you take up the coaching role with Bengal Warriorz, and how do you envision shaping the team's future?
Bengal Warriorz have always been a fantastic team in the PKL. I always wanted to work for this team and now I am very lucky to finally get the opportunity. We at Bengal Warriorz would like to field a new team filled with young talents.
2) Can you share your coaching philosophy and how you plan to align it with the Warriorz's setup?
Kabaddi is a physical, body-contact game. Injuries play a very big factor here. I would like us to make use of scientific training to enhance ourselves. Our team will consist of young players along with experienced seniors. With this method of training, I'd like to take my team forward.
3) How do you plan to balance nurturing young talent while maintaining a competitive edge?
We are setting up scouting camps to find new talent. There are NYPs (New Young Players), nominee players-we want to bring them together, make them play as a unit, test them, and then shortlist based on performance. We'll apply scientific training methods and move forward from here.
4) What areas are you focusing on to improve the team, and what will be your auction strategy?
Right now, our focus is on youth. We've shortlisted and selected four NYPs. We'll build our squad combining young and experienced players, and go position-wise from there during the auction.
5) Star defender Fazel Atrachali played last season. Will we see him again?
Fazel Atrachali is a brilliant player, and I would personally want him to play for us again. But the decision will be made during the auction. Obviously, a player of his calibre will be in high demand, and a lot will depend on the budget. But yes, I'd love to see him back.
6) What personal goals have you set for yourself in this role?
Our goal is to create a new team. We will bring in fresh talents this season and keep adding in the coming years. This is a long-term project aimed at giving our best in the future.
7) Where do you see Bengal Warriorz in the next few seasons under your leadership?
We are looking at Bengal Warriorz as a champion team. We're taking it one step at a time, and I believe one day we will be crowned champions again.
With the PKL Season 12 auction set for May 31 and June 1 in Mumbai, all eyes will be on the new-look Bengal Warriorz as they begin their rebuild under a proven leader.
