Pro Kabaddi League Season 11: Haryana Steelers Release Mohit Nandal Amid Doping Controversy After PKL 2024 Auction

In an unexpected move, the Haryana Steelers have released their former captain Mohit Nandal ahead of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 11.

This decision comes in the wake of serious allegations against Nandal, who has reportedly tested positive for a banned substance. The news was reported by Khel Now, which also revealed that Nandal could be facing a ban from the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) due to this violation.

According to the website, Mohit Nandal has contested these allegations, claiming that the positive test results are a consequence of medication he has been on following a head surgery three years ago.

Although the official response from NADA is still pending, the Haryana Steelers were evidently aware of the situation prior to making their decision. This move is particularly surprising given that the Steelers had retained Nandal in their squad before the recent auction, reflecting his significant role over the past three seasons.

The release of Nandal has had a noticeable impact on the team's strategy, as evidenced by their auction decisions. Despite having a substantial budget of INR 2.32 crore, the Haryana Steelers chose to spend INR 2.07 crore on Mohammadreza Shadloui to bolster their defence, rather than focusing on strengthening their raiding department. This shift in focus has raised questions among fans and analysts alike, given that the team had previously been expected to invest more in their raiders.

The Steelers' defence strategy under coach Manpreet Singh has been a topic of considerable discussion. Singh has emphasized the importance of building a robust defensive lineup, a focus that has gained additional significance in light of Nandal's uncertain status.

Nandal, who played a pivotal role in the Steelers' journey to the finals last season, was a key defensive asset and co-captain alongside Jaideep Dahiya. His departure is a substantial blow to the team, which will now need to adapt quickly to the changes.

During the previous season, Nandal was a standout performer with 70 tackle points in 24 matches. His defensive prowess was highlighted in crucial moments, such as his seven-point performance against Fazel Atrachali's Gujarat Giants, which was instrumental in securing a win in the eliminator match. Although his primary role was in defence, Nandal had also contributed as a raider, maintaining a 100% not-out percentage and even putting in a Super Raid.
