Pro Kabaddi League Elevates Referee Standards: Trains 38 Officials at Camp Ahead of Season 10

By MyKhel Team

Over the past nine years, the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) has not only focused on developing a strong player pool but has also made significant strides in building a skilled group of technical officials.

Similar to how players view the league as an aspirational career, technical officials have found the PKL to be a viable career option. Recognizing the necessity for high-quality refereeing in a world-class competition, Mr. E Prasad Rao, the Technical Director of the PKL, initiated the PKL Referee Training Camps.

Before the inaugural season, a coaching course was conducted to familiarize technical officials with innovative rule changes like the 30-second raids and do-or-die raids unique to the PKL. Around 30 officials were selected from over 100 participants in the first technical officials workshop.

Over the course of nine seasons, the training program for referees has evolved to keep pace with technological advancements in the game, such as utilizing multiple cameras.

In preparation for the milestone tenth season, the PKL organized a Referee Training Camp in Kolhapur, conducted by Mr. E Prasad Rao from November 18-29, 2023. The camp involved 38 officials gearing up for Season 10.

Prior to the camp, three online workshops were conducted, categorizing referees into two groups: new officials and those with PKL experience. About ten talented referees were identified through these workshops, set to officiate in the upcoming season.

The training camp schedule included physical activities from 6:30-8:30 am to enhance officials' speed, agility, and reaction time. The theory session, analyzing match situations, took place between 10 am - 1 pm. The final session of the day, from 5-7:30 pm, involved practical practice as officials officiated in games between club teams.

As Season 10 approaches, with the opening match between Telugu Titans and Gujarat Giants on December 2, 2023, in Ahmedabad, the PKL continues to prioritize the development and preparation of its technical officials.

The league aims to maintain high standards of refereeing through ongoing training programs and adaptation to technological advancements.

Season 10 will be broadcast live on the Star Sports Network and Disney+ Hotstar.
