Sanju Devi Stars as Defending Champions India Cruise Past Bangladesh 42-21 in Women’s Kabaddi in Asian Games

Nagoya, 21 September 2026: India began the defence of their women's kabaddi title at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya with a 42-21 win over Bangladesh in their opening Group A fixture at the Tokai Citizens Gymnasium on Monday morning.

India produced a dominant all-round display to defeat Bangladesh, combining a disciplined defensive setup with consistent attacking pressure, led by Sanju Devi's contribution in offence.

India made a strong start and quickly took command of the contest, denying Bangladesh easy access to the bonus line while their raiders consistently added to the scoreboard. Bangladesh skipper Sraboni Mollick tried to keep her team within touching distance, but India's defence remained organised and gave the opposition little room to operate.

Manisha Kumari stood out in the left-cover position, while captain Pushpa Rana and Sonali Shingate contributed crucial points in attack. India's sustained pressure eventually resulted in an All-Out, allowing them to head into half-time with a 21-10 advantage.

The Indian side resumed with the same attacking intent after the break. Sanju Devi and Pooja repeatedly managed hand touches, while the defenders maintained an aggressive line that made life difficult for Bangladesh's raiders. India soon forced another All-Out and continued to build on their lead, with Sanju Devi proving particularly effective during raids.

Bangladesh briefly threatened a comeback as Sraboni and her teammates put together a series of points. Their defence also managed to disrupt India's rhythm, reducing the deficit with five minutes left on the clock. India, however, quickly regained control, with Sanju Devi producing a string of successful raids to widen the gap once again and secure a convincing 42-21 victory.

India accumulated 42 points in total, including 11 bonus points and four points from All-Outs. Bangladesh finished with five bonus points and one point from a Super Tackle.

The victory gives India a positive beginning to their title defence. Their next challenge comes against a strong Iran side at 8:30 AM on September 23.
