In 2018, Kimu moved to the United States to train with coach Brian Loeffler at Loyola University Maryland. This opportunity came through an introduction by US Para swimmer Bradley Snyder. During his time in the US, he also studied English at Notre Dame of Maryland University.
Despite facing challenges due to language barriers, Kimu adapted and grew more self-assured. He returned to Japan in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2023, Natsumi Hoshi has been his personal coach.
In 2022, Kimu underwent surgery on his nose due to sinusitis. This procedure was crucial for his health and athletic performance.
Kimu has received numerous awards throughout his career. In March 2021, he threw the ceremonial first pitch at a Japanese Nippon Professional Baseball season opener. In 2017, he was honoured with the Prize for Encouragement at the Hanawa Hokiichi Awards in Saitama Prefecture.
He received the Ritto Citizen Honorary Award in 2016 and the Grand Prix award at the Japan Para Sport Awards the same year. Additionally, he earned People's Honour awards from Shiga Prefecture in 2012 and 2014. Kimu was also Japan's flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
Kimu cites US Para swimmer Bradley Snyder as his hero. He has also been influenced by coach Masato Teranishi and Japanese Para swimmer Junichi Kawai. His philosophy is to "do your best by focusing on what you can in the moment, even if you are not in your best form."
In 2021, Kimu released his autobiography titled "A blind swimmer who swims in the dark, challenges the world by overcoming myself." The book details his journey and experiences as a Para swimmer.
Kimu aims to continue competing at a high level under the guidance of Natsumi Hoshi. His journey from overcoming adversities to achieving success serves as an inspiration for many aspiring athletes.
