Sydney: Triple gold medallist Kim Soo-Nyung launched her Olympic comeback by leading South Korea's women archers to a combined team score world record in Sydney on Saturday, putting them on target for gold.
Kim, 30, returned from seven years in retirement to score 671 out of 720 and take first place in the women's individual ranking round at the Sydney International Archery Park.
Compatriot Kim Nam-Soon scored 662, with Yun Mi-Jin shooting 661, to give Korea a combined team score of 1,994, beating the previous mark of 1,984, also set by South Korea at Atlanta in 1996.
"The younger competitors look up to her as a mentor," coach Jang Young-Sool said of Kim, who won gold at Seoul in 1988 and Barcelona in 1992. "She has boosted morale in the team."
South Korea's women archers were already favourites for gold, having claimed seven gold medals in the past four Olympics.
In the ranking round, Korea placed first, third and fourth out of 64 archers, with Italian archer Natalia Valeeva taking second place with 667. The rankings determine which archers play each other in the individual elimination rounds beginning on Sunday.
