Anjali’s effort go in vain in shooting event

Sydney: Mumbai's 30-year-old Anjali Vedpathak on Saturday became the first Indian shooter to have made it to the Olympics final. Despite her gallant effort, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) sub-inspector came last in the final of eight.

Nancy Johnson of United States claimed the gold in the final of the 10-metre air rifle event. Anjali and Korea's Dae Young Choi were tied at the seventh slot. To break the deadlock a shoot-off was ordered and Choi shot 10.4 against 9.8 of the Anjali. The Indian finished her first tryst in the Olympics with 493.1 points

In a high-tech shooting hall, Anjali fired superbly in the first round of 40. In her first 10 shots, the diminutive Indian shot 98 out of maximum 100, her next round of 10 was superb as she hit all the targets for 100 points. in the third essay of the 10 pointers, Anjali had 97 points and in the last 10-pointer she earned 99 to finish the round with at seventh place with 394, a place ahead against the eventual bronze medal winner Jing Gad of China.

In the final, Anjali became bit tentative while five of the eight shooters in the fray shot over and above 10 points to start with. Anjali along with Jing Gad and Dae Young Choi 9.7 each.
