De Bruijn breaks 100m butterfly world record

Sydney: Inge de Bruijn broke her own world record to win the women's Olympic 100 metres butterfly title on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Dutchwoman, who had twice lowered the Olympic record in Saturday's heats and semi-finals, swept through in 56.61 seconds to slice 0.03 seconds from the world mark she set in Federal Way, Washington, on July 22 this year.

De Bruijn twice lowered the 100 butterfly world mark earlier this year during a spree in which she left seven world records broken and one equalled.

Martina Moravcova of Slovakia took the silver in 57.97 and American Dara Torres the bronze in 58.20.
