Mattoo expresses surprise over point fluctuations in bout

Sydney: Indian chef-de-mission at the Olympic games, Ashok Mattoo, on Sunday expressed surprise over the marked fluctuations in the performance of flyweight boxer Suresh Singh in his bout against Kim Ki-Suk of South Korea, which was decided 9-5 in favor of the Korean.

"I am not questioning the judges' decision. But I certainly wonder how Suresh's performance could fluctuate so sharply," Mattoo, who is also the chief of Indian Boxing Federation, said after the bout.

The score after the first round was tied at 2-2 and after third round at 3-3 before the South Korean raced ahead with a 5-0 decision in the fourth round. Suresh pulled back a little in the final round.

"This sharp fluctuation is beyond our comprehension. How can one, after being level in the first three rounds, go down so sharply in the fourth and stage a remarkable recovery in the last?" Mattoo asked.

Mattoo, however, said he would not lodge any protest.

Meanwhile, rider Anees Imtiaz, who has been in Australia for some time now, will take part in all three equestrian events - cross country, show jumping and dressage - and will be astride his own horse.

Shooter Anajali Vedpathak, who finished a creditable eighth in a field of 49 in the 10-m air rifle on Saturday, will participate in the small bore 3-position event also though that is not her pet event, according to Mattoo.
