Whitfield stuns Vuckovic for triathlon gold

Sydney: Canada's Simon Whitfield produced a stunning late charge to catch Germany's Stephen Vuckovic 100 metres from the finish to win the men's Olympic triathlon on Sunday.

In an outstanding race, the 25-year-old timed his run to perfection to catch Vuckovic who had looked the winner after overhauling world champion Olivier Marceau 7km into the run. Czech Jan Rehula finished third.

Marceau started the run almost a minute clear of an enormous pack but in hot conditions could not hold on. Favourite Simon Lessing of Britain finished ninth while Australian Craig Walton, the leader from the swim, could not live with the pace of the run and finished down the field.
