Sydney: Sixteen-year-old American Megan Quann took the Olympic women's 100 metres breaststroke crown from Penny Heyns on Monday, charging through at the finish to take the gold as the South African faded.
Heyns, who won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the 1996 Atlanta Games, took the race out boldly and was inside her own world record schedule at the turn.
But 15 metres from the finish Quann eased past her to win in one minute 7.05 seconds. Fifteen-year-old Australian Leisel Jones also slipped through to take the silver in 1:07.49, with Heyns having to settle for the bronze in 1:07.55 ahead of fellow South African Sarah Poewe.
