200 golfers for Uppal's Extraordinary League

Chandigarh, Jun 20 (UNI) More than 200 amateur golfers from Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali will tee off tomorrow in the one-day Uppal's Extraordinary Golf League Tournament at the Chandigarh Golf Course here.

The tournament will be on full handicap against strokeplay.

Competitions will be in the age categories of men below 50 years, 50-65 years, 65-70 years and above 70 years. There is no age category in the women's section. Women and men above 70 years will play only nine holes.

Addressing a press conference, Chandigarh Golf Club President D S Bains said the one-day tournament aimed at bringing the golf playing community in the vicinity together. The Uppal Group is sponsoring the meet.

''The tournament will provide exposure to the members of all age groups from Chandigarh Golf Club, Shivalik Golf Club and Chandigarh Golf Association'', said Bains, hoping that Uppals would continue to support golf and the Chandigarh Golf Club in future also.

''A spate of golf tournaments were conducted recently in Chandigarh which is considered to be golf nursery of India and Asia,'' he said.

Mr Harmit Chawla, Vice President (Sales), Uppal Group, said ''the extraordinary league is an initiative of the Uppal Group to promote golf and build a long and enduring relations with the golf playing community of the region.'' Being a tournament for amateurs, there is no prize money. However, trophies would be awarded. There will be prizes for gross category up to 69 years; nett below 50 years, nett 50 to 60 years, nett 69 to 70 years, nett 70 years and above, ladies nett category (in case there are minimum five participants), longest drive (hole No. 18) and nearest to pin (Hole No 8).
