Haryana announce cash prize for Malleswari

By Super

Chandigarh: In keeping with his promise of rewarding Olympic medal winners from his state, Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala on Wednesday announced a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh for weightlifter Karnam Malleswari, who won bronze medal at Sydney Olympic games on Tuesday.

Mr Chautala congratulated Malleswari for becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal and only the third Indian to win an individual medal, and hoped her achievement will inspire other sportspersons to strive for international excellence.

The Haryana government had earlier announced a cash prize of Rs one crore for any athlete hailing from the state who won a gold medal at the Sydney Olympics. A silver medallist from the state was promised Rs 50 lakh, while Rs 25 lakh was announced for the bronze medallist.

Born in Vishakhapatnam, Malleswari shifted to Yamunanagar after marrying Rajesh Tyagi, who is also a weightlifter.
