New Delhi: Union minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa congratulated Karnam Malleswari for winning the weightlifting bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics.

In his message Mr Dhindsa said that September 19 is a red letter day in the annals of India's sporting history. It is for the first time that a medal has been won by any Indian sportswoman at the Olympics. He further said that her performance has done the nation proud and will inspire the future generations.

Mr Dhindsa said, ''ON my own behalf and that of the government of India, I congratulate you on your grand performance. I am confident that there are many milestones to be achieved in future and you will continue to bring laurels for the country.''
