Sydney: India's Leander Paes, bronze medallist in Atlanta four years ago, was beaten in the first round of the men's singles of the Sydney Olympics tennis tournament on Wednesday.
Paes lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to Mikael Tillstrom of Sweden. Later on Wednesday, he and Mahesh Bhupathi were due to open their quest for the men's doubles title in which they are seen as medal hopefuls based on their 1999 record.
The pair dominated men's doubles last year, reaching the finals of all four Grand Slams and winning the French and Wimbledon titles, before splitting up.
Their first match is against unfancied Romanians Andrei Pavel and Gabriel Tifu and if they win, as expected, they will come up against the top-seeded Australians Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge, the famed "Woodies".
