In a thrilling Game 7 of the 2024 FIDE World Championship, reigning champion Ding Liren pulled off a miraculous escape, holding on for a draw against a fiercely determined Gukesh D on Tuesday (December 3).
The high-stakes encounter, played in Singapore, ended in a nerve-wracking stalemate after 72 moves, leaving the match tied at 3.5-3.5.

The game took a dramatic turn on move 40 when Ding, under immense time pressure, made a crucial blunder by playing 40...Ke5 instead of the more accurate 40...Nc8-b6.
With just seven seconds on his clock, the champion's error seemed to hand the game to Gukesh. However, Gukesh, also battling the clock and nerves, was unable to find the winning line in a complex endgame.
Gukesh's preparation was evident from the outset. The 18-year-old prodigy introduced a sharp novelty in the Neo-Grünfeld Defense's Classical Variation, gaining an early advantage and keeping Ding on the backfoot. Despite being pressed for time, Ding's defensive skills shone through as he navigated the complications, ultimately salvaging a half-point.
With seven games in the books, the championship match is delicately poised at 3.5-3.5. The second half promises more fireworks, starting with Game 8 on December 4th, where Ding will have the advantage of playing White. The pressure is mounting as both players vie for the coveted title of World Champion.
