Manisha, Nirupama routed by Aussie pair

By Super

India's challenge in women's doubles of the Olympic competition ended even before it began. Wild card entrants Manisha Malhotra and Nirupama Vaidyanathan were overawed and overpowered by Australia's Jelena Dokic and Rene Stubbs in what could go down as one of the quickest matches in tennis history.

The Indians were absolutely no match for the Australian pair and were blown off by the power game of the Australians. The Indians failed to win a single game. The scoreline 6-0, 6-0 in favour of the Australians could also, perhaps, go down in tennis history.

The Indian pair was a last minute entrant with the International Olympic Committee deciding to give it a wild card just a few days before the Games were to start. Nirupama of Coimbatore has been playing abroad in the circuit, but failed to translate her experience into any meaningful exposure with her partner.

Leave alone the games, the Indians were generally found struggling even to win a point. The rout puts Indian sports in true perspective vis-6is world sports.
