Bulgaria to pay fine to keep athletes in Sydney

By Super

Sydney: The Bulgarian weightlifting federation will pay a $ 50,000 fine to stay in the Olympics after three of their medallists failed dope tests, International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch said on Friday.

Samaranch told a news conference the money would be used to fight doping in Bulgaria and the funds would be controlled by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).

A country which has three positive tests involving athletes within 12 months is suspended from competition for one year under a "three strikes and out" IWF rule.

The alternative is to pay a $ 50,000 fine, as Romania did earlier this week in Sydney to stay in the Games.

Samaranch told a news conference, "We reached an agreement with the national federation that this 50,000 must go back to the country. They must use the 50,000 for the fight against doping."
