Ugandan athlete arrested for sexual assault

Sydney: South Australian police arrested a 22-year-old Ugandan athlete in Adelaide on Saturday in connection with an alleged sexual assault on a teenage girl.

A spokeswoman for New South Wales police told Reuters that investigators were flying from Sydney to South Australia to continue their inquiries into the allegations.

She said no further details would be released at this stage, including the man's name and nationality.

But the International Olympic Committee in Sydney said earlier he was Ugandan and they were working with officials from that country to persuade him to turn himself into police.

He went missing from the Olympics after a warrant was issued for his arrest on Friday.

Police said earlier they were hunting the athlete in connection with an alleged sexual assault on a 17-year-old girl in a western suburb of Sydney early last Wednesday.

The Ugandan delegation at the Games said it would not comment on the case. "The matter is in the hands of the police," a spokeswoman at the team's quarters said by telephone.
