Sydney: Maurice Greene and Marion Jones (both United States) emerged as the fastest athletes by respectively winning the 100 metres sprint for men and women at the Sydney Olympics on Saturday.
Greene, the world record holder and current world champion, clocked 9.87 seconds. The 26-year-old American is also the world 200 metres champion but failed to qualify for the longer sprint in Sydney when he injured a hamstring in the final of the US trials.
His next and final event will be now be the 4 x 100 metres relay next weekend.
Jones, who is quest for an unprecedented five gold medals in a single Olympic Games, began her hold hunt in right earnest by winning the shortest of the sprint races. Ekaterini Thanou (Greece) won the silver and Tanya Lawrence (Jamaica) took the bronze.
