Sydney: Australia's Cathy Freeman won the Olympic women's 400 metres title on Monday. Roared on by 110,000 spectators in Stadium Australia, the reigning world champion came first with a time of 49.11 seconds.
Britain's Katharine Merry took the bronze medal in a time of 49.72 seconds, behind Lorraine Graham of Jamaica who finished in 49.58 seconds.
Freeman, 27, was favoured to win after her main rival, 1996 Olympic champion Marie- Jose Perec of France, pulled out of the Sydney Games last week.
Perec, who left saying she was being harassed by the media, beat Freeman into second place in Atlanta in 1996 on her way to a 200 and 400 metres double as well as a 4 x 400 metres relay gold.
Freeman, who lit the Olympic Flame on the opening day of Sydney 2000, has become the first aborigine from Australia to win an Olympic gold in an individual event.
