Sydney: International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Juan Antonio Samaranch on Monday visited the Sydney weightlifting tournament, rocked by a series of doping cases since the Games began.
In what appeared to be a public show of support for the sport, Samaranch sat with International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) head Tamas Ajan and watched part of the men's 105-kg heavyweight contest.
Seven weightlifters have either tested positive in Sydney or had positive tests announced since they arrived at the Olympic village. The Bulgarian team was sent home last week after three of their athletes failed dope tests.
The IWF has played down speculation that weightlifting could be dropped from future editions of the Olympics if lifters continue to test positive.
