Mumbai: Serena Williams did not manage to get a singles place on the powerful US Olympic women's tennis team, but the 18-year-old American is using her free time to have fun at the Olympics. I've been really enjoying myself here," said Williams after teaming up with sister Venus to defeat Elena Likhovtseva and Anastasia Myskina of Russia in three sets in women's doubles.
Her goal is to be a spectator at five events. Williams has already attended men's and women's Olympic basketball games and her new passion - archery. "I'm really into archery now. I'm going to give it a try," said Williams. "It takes a lot of precision and concentration and it looks like you don't have to be in the best of shape to be an archer. That's ideal."
The Williams sisters' path to a gold medal in the women's doubles was aided by the elimination of second seeds Conchita Martinez and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain by the Belarussian team of Olga Barabanschikova and Natasha Zvereva.
Serena Williams said she had thought she might feel left out having to skip the singles. But later she is been having so much fun watching the events that she does not miss the singles.
Venus Williams, with singles and doubles to contend with, has not ventured from her hotel room to watch any Olympic events. Serena plans on getting to some athletics and synchronized swimming to reach her goal as a spectator.
