Sydney: Romania's Gabriela Szabo won the women's 5,000 metres Olympic title on Monday in a new Olympic record time of 14 minutes 40.79 seconds.
The diminutive 24-year-old double world champion came to Sydney as a big favourite after going unbeaten in 1999, also ending the season as the IAAF Grand Prix champion.
This was her second Olympics. In 1996 she competed in both the 5,000 and 1,500 metres, winning the silver over the shorter distance, while going out in the heats in her favourite event.
The 5,000 event in Atlanta was the first time the race was staged at an Olympics. It was won by Wang Junxia in 14:59.88.
