Sydney: India came within seconds of a first Olympic boxing medal on Wednesday before it slipped tantalisingly out of their grasp.
Light-heavyweight Gurcharan Singh traded blows with Ukrainian Andri Fedtchouk for the full four rounds of their quarter-final, drawing 4-4 after the second round and 7-7 after the third.
They were level 9-9 with a minute remaining and Singh managed to land a punch for an 11-10 advantage with just 14 seconds remaining. It still proved too much time for Singh to hang on and secure a certain medal as a semi-finalist.
The Ukrainian equalised six seconds from the bell and a sudden flurry left the final score at 12-12. Fedtchouk won the tiebreak 60-42. "It was most disappointing to our camp, a great disappointment," said team manager Rajesh Bhandari.
"He could not make it. Our boxer fought very well but the other boy was also good. It was an equal bout."
