Pedroso wins men's long jump gold

Sydney: Ivan Pedroso won the men's long jump gold at the Sydney Games in dramatic fashion on Thursday to claim his first Olympic title.

Cuba's triple World Champion, who has dominated his event for the past five years, jumped 8.55 metres with his last effort to beat Jai Taurima of Australia and Roman Schurenko of Ukraine.

Pedroso came fourth at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and, hampered by a leg injury, slumped to 12th in Atlanta.
