Greece’s Kenteris wins men’s 200m

By Super

Sydney: Britain's Darren Campbell took the silver medal in the men's 200 metres final at the Sydney Olympics on Thursday behind Konstantinos Kenteris of Greece.

Kenteris, taking full advantage of the absence of Americans Maurice Greene and Michael Johnson, sprang a major surprise to win one of the most wide-open finals of the Games.

Kenteris timed 20.09 seconds, Campbell 20.14 and Ato Boldon of Trinidad and Tobago 20.20 to take the bronze.

Christian Malcolm finished fifth in 20.23 seconds behind Obadele Thompson of Barbados.

Americans Greene -- the 1999 200 metres world champion -- and Johnson -- the 1996 Olympic gold medallist over the distance -- were both injured in the US trials and failed to qualify for the event.

Boldon, the 1997 world champion over the distance, had been the pre-Games favourite.
