Sydney: Germany gained some revenge for their defeat earlier in the week by Britain, which knocked them out of the medal round, by beating them 4-0 in the play-off for fifth place on Friday.
Germany opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Christoph Eimer delivered a pinpoint pass to Bjoern Michel and Oliver Domke made it 2-0 three minutes later with a cracking reverse stick shot.
The intensity went up a notch in the second half as Britain fought to get back in the game, but Christoph Bechmann put the game beyond doubt with a flick over the goal-keeper's head in the 59th minute.
Bechmann had staged a running battle with umpire Steve Horgan in the first half, eventually receiving a yellow card in the 26th minute, but with his mind on the job after half time he proved a constant menace to the British defence.
Germany's revenge mission was completed when Tibor Weissenborn netted the fourth seven minutes from full time.
A finish in the top six at the Olympics guarantees both nations a start at next year's Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan.
