Indian athletes continue dismal show on track

Sydney: Indian men and women failed to get past the first rounds in the Olympic athletic events at Stadium Australia on Friday.

In the men's 4 x 100m relay race, C Thirugnana Durai, Rajeev Balakrishnan, Ajay Raj Singh and Anil Kumar P could not qualify for the semi-final after clocking 40.23 seconds in the first heat.

Indian women, Jayalakshmi V, Vinita Tripathi, Saraswati Dey and Rachita Mistry also failed to qualify for the semi-final of the 4 x 100m relay race recording 45.20 seconds in the third heat.

In women's javelin, Gurmeet Kaur was eliminated in the qualifying round with a throw of 52.78 metres in Group 1. Earlier, the men's 4 x 400m relay squad had also failed to advance to the next round.
