Sydney: Kenyan Noah Ngeny produced the shock of the Sydney Games on Friday as he outsprinted Hicham El Guerrouj to win the men's 1,500 metres gold.
Ngeny, the world silver medallist behind the Moroccan, timed three minutes 32.07.
World record holder Guerrouj, whose hopes of gold in 1996 had disappeared when he was tripped up, timed 3:32.32. Bernard Lagat of Kenya was third (3:32.44).
The 26-year-old El Guerrouj, who celebrated his birthday the day before the Games' opening ceremony, had lost only one 1,500 metres race since his Atlanta defeat four years ago.
