Sydney: Algeri's Nouria Merah-Benida won the women's 1,500 metres gold medal after a thrilling sprint finish on Saturday. Merah-Benida just hung on as she attacked off the bend to win in four minutes, 5.10 seconds.
Violeta Szekely of Romania (4:05.15) was second while her compatriot Gabriela Szabo (4:05.27) surged from ninth to third in the final straight. Szabo won the 5,000 metres last week.
American Suzy favour Hamilton, the fastest woman over the distance this year, was leading at the bell but fell just before the final sprint, finishing last.
