Favourites US lowered as Bahamas take gold

By Super

Sydney: Double sprint champion Marion Jones missed out on another Olympic title on Saturday as the Bahamas won the women's 4 x 100 metres relay title. Their quartet timed 41.95 seconds to beat Jamaica (42.13), with the United States third (42.20).

The US had been the favourites with the 24-year-old Jones, who won the 100 and 200 metres titles earlier in the Games, anchoring their quartet. Jones came to Sydney hoping to become the first athlete to win five track and field golds at a single Games but the attempt foundered on Friday when she came third in the long jump.

She is due to take part in the 4 x 400 metres relay later on Saturday.
