6000 athletes in fray for National Youth Games

Bangalore, Jun 11 (UNI) More than 6000 sportspersons in the Under-18 age group from all parts of the country would participate in the first National Youth Games to be held here from July 22 to 29, Karnataka Minister for Sports and Youth Services Gulihatti Shekar said today.

Talking to newspersons here, he said the events would be held in 24 disciplines. The winners stake claim to participate in the forthcoming Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Pune in September and Youth Olympics in Singapore in 2010.

Various Committees have been formed to create facilities to organise each event and secretaries of different departments were heading the panels, he said.

Games High Power Committee Member Secretary Amar Kumar Panday said that new synthetic tracks would be provided for field events in athletics.

The disciplines in which competitions would be held were Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing (boys), cycling, Equestrian, Football, Fencing, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, tennis, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Triathlon, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling (boys).

Karnataka Olympic Association President K Govindraj said it was also proposed to hold a 5 km cycle race during the Games.
