7 Delhi sportspersons presented Rajiv State awards
New Delhi, Aug 22 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today presented Rajiv Gandhi State Sports Award 2006-07 to seven sportspersons in a function at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Bawana, to mark the birth anniversary of the late Prime Minister.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dikshit exhorted students of Delhi to concentrate in training to win medals in the Commonwealth Games 2010.
''They will have to pull up their socks immediately.
The winning of medals would not only bring pride to Delhi but also go a long way in claiming more and more medals for the country,'' she said.
She said her Government has chalked out a comprehensive plan to promote sports at school and college level, adding that her Government would soon finalise its sport policy.
The chief minister presented the awards to Vikram Bhatnagar (Shooting), Sourav Vij (Athletic), Abhishek Verma (Archery), Sanjeev Sejwal (Swimming), Parimarjan Negi and Tanya Sachdev (Chess) and Balwan Singh (Paralymbic Athletics).
A cheque of Rs. 2 lakh and a memento was presented to the awardees.
Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, local MP Sajjan Kumar, local MLA Surendra Kumar and a large number of villagers were present at the stadium.
The 8th All India Rajiv Gandhi Wrestling Gold Cup and 7th All India Rajiv Gandhi Girls Basketball Tournament were also simultaneously being organised at the stadium.
Around 450 wrestlers and 18 basketball teams from different states are participating in these events.
