75-yr-old Vijay Ved shocks Marathe in billiards first round
Mumbai, Aug 8 (UNI) Seventy-five-year-old Vijay Ved fashioned the upset of the day when he stunned fancied Umesh Marathe in billiards first round action in the Kotak Mahindra Bank-Wilson Jones Open Handicap Billiards&Snooker Championship at the P J Hindu Gymkhana here today.
Playing cue sports since the '50s, P J Hindu Gymkhana's Ved (+100) was the toast of the day as he came up with a brilliant performance for a shock 200-133 win over the dangerous Marathe (+90) of Dadar Club.
Ved rolled back the years as he enjoyed home conditions on a familiar top to take a substantial lead. He sustained the pressure with remarkable consistency as Marathe cracked under duress.
There were upsets in the second round of snooker competition as Harish Mirchandani (+35) stunned Rovin D'Souza (+30) 106-45, 67-94, 91-77 in a tight contest between quality players.
In another close second round tie, Matunga Gymkhana's Ajay Deware (+60) shocked Suresh Hetampuria (+55) of Spring Club in straight frames.
