A Lockdown Impetus Blossoming Into Professional Heights: Divyanshi Bhowmick’s Voyage In Table Tennis So Far

In a country where sporting success and journey are overshadowed by cricket frenzy, Divyanshi's journey has been both modest and remarkable. What started out as a casual introduction to the game of table tennis has soon turned into a professional career for the youngster.

Blending instinct with innovation and guided by a growing ecosystem around the sport, Divyanshi is steadily carving her identity as one of the emerging faces of Indian table tennis, with ambitions that stretch far beyond domestic success.

A Lockdown Impetus Blossoming Into Professional Heights Divyanshi Bhowmick s Voyage In Table Tennis So Far

From Passion To Profession

Her story begins in the most organic and Indian way that one can think of. Talking about her journey in Table Tennis, Divyanshi said it started way back when she was in the fourth grade. "My father used to play table tennis, so he encouraged my sister and me to take it up. Initially, I trained a couple of days a week, but during the lockdown, we got a table at home, and I played daily with my family," she said.

With a table set up at home, hours of daily play alongside her father and sister deepened her connection with the sport. That phase proved decisive. As competitive action resumed, Devanshi made her mark at district tournaments, earned selection into the Maharashtra team, and took her first serious steps into professional table tennis. Since then, her rise has been steady and impressive.

The Art Of Deception

Talking about her strength, Divyanshi pointed out that the biggest strength in her game that she has is deception. "I use long pimples on my backhand and have a strong backhand tap, which allows me to set up attacks," Divyanshi said. The next phase of her development, she believes, lies in becoming more aggressive. This will take initiative, refining her attacking instincts, and mastering twiddling to add another layer to her gameplay.

Like many young paddlers around the country, Divyanshi has drawn inspiration from Manika Batra. Watching her idol play has not only sharpened her understanding of the game but also sparked her ambition to one day share the table with her.

Table Tennis Ecosystem In The Country

The U-15 Asian champion also shared the valuable contribution of the Indian table tennis ecosystem, which has a positive impact on her game. She acknowledged the opportunities that the government is providing in the form of sponsorship to promote the game within the country. This has been marked by a rise in international tournaments hosted by India in better-quality games.

She acknowledges that infrastructure and opportunities in Indian table tennis are improving. This has been marked by a sharp rise in international tournaments hosted in India, and better-quality venues have created a more competitive and accessible environment for emerging players.

On the professional front, she has shown a keen awareness of how learning from peers can shape growth. Reflecting on her journey, she recalled interacting with Sreeja Akula during the UTT Dream Juniors, an exchange that proved particularly valuable given their similar playing styles.

"In the past, I shared that I exchanged words with Sreeja Akula during the UTT Dream Juniors, which helped me improve my game and refine my technique," she said, highlighting how those conversations translated into tangible progress on the table.

She also pointed to the broader evolution of the sport in the country, expressing optimism about the emerging talent pool. "I think talent is coming from all parts of India. Players across regions are performing really well, which is great for the sport," she added, underlining the growing depth and reach of table tennis across India.

What Next For Her?

Looking ahead, Devanshi's ambitions are clear and ambitious. Her immediate goal is to break into the Indian women's team and deliver strong performances at the Asian and World Youth Championships. Beyond that, she has her sights firmly set on the 2028 Summer Olympics, a stage where she hopes to represent India and bring home medals.
