Aaron Rai Seals PGA Championship Triumph In Surreal Major Victory

Aaron Rai captured the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club with a late surge, overturning a three-shot deficit with 10 holes left. Rai closed with an eagle and four back-nine birdies to secure a three-stroke victory over Alex Smalley and Jon Rahm.

The win made Rai the first English golfer to claim the PGA Championship since 1919, when Jim Barnes lifted the trophy. Rai finished nine under par, while Smalley and Rahm both posted six under, as several leading names fell away during the final round.

Rai’s charge began with a 40-foot eagle putt on the par-five ninth, which shifted momentum in his favour. That moment triggered a composed back nine, where Rai carded four birdies and protected his lead, despite pressure from Smalley, Rahm and a strong chasing group.

McIlroy praised Rai’s breakthrough performance and popularity among peers. McIlroy said: "You won't find one person on the property who's not happy for him," when asked about Rai's stunning victory, highlighting the regard Rai holds in the locker room.

Schauffele, a two-time major champion, highlighted Rai’s work ethic. Schauffele said: "Rarely do you feel like people work way harder than you. I've played a pretty good amount of time and Aaron is always there. He's always in the gym. He's always on the range. That's what it's about to be a major champion. You put the work in when nobody's looking."

PGA Championship winner Aaron Rai reflects

Rai admitted the scale of the achievement has been hard to process. Rai said: "It [winning] is very surreal. It has been a bit of a frustrating season so to be stood here is definitely outside of my wildest imagination. I think it is really good consistency over the last few weeks with practice. My body feels great and I have really enjoyed the course this week."

The champion’s comments reflected a year in which results had not matched preparation, yet Rai’s recent training brought a steady run of form into Aronimink. Rai’s physical condition also appeared strong, allowing Rai to handle the demanding course layout across four rounds.

PGA Championship disappointment for Scottie Scheffler

Scheffler, who arrived as defending champion, could not mount a decisive run and struggled particularly on the greens. Scheffler said to Sky Sports: "When I look back on a week like this, I feel I've had a really good year on the greens and to have a disappointing week on the greens at a major is a tough pill to swallow," after finishing T14.

The outcome at Aronimink delivered a historic first major for Rai, ended a century-long wait for an English PGA Championship winner, and reshaped the season’s narrative. Established stars, including Scheffler and McIlroy, left with mixed feelings, while Rai’s disciplined approach and patience were rewarded with golf’s latest major title.
