Ludvig Aberg Relishes Sunday Challenge As Three-Shot Lead At The Players Championship

Ludvig Aberg carries a three-shot lead into Sunday's play at The Players Championship after a 71 in round three. Michael Thorbjornsen climbs to second, while Cameron Young and others chase. Aberg's strong start and late birdie- eagle surge kept him ahead as the field tightened ahead of the final round.

Ludvig Aberg heads into the final round of The Players Championship with a three-shot cushion at 13-under. Aberg is chasing a first PGA Tour title at TPC Sawgrass and will start Sunday clear of debutant Michael Thorbjornsen, after posting a controlled one-under 71 in the third round.

Thorbjornsen moves into solo second at 10-under after a composed 67 in only a first start at The Players Championship. Cameron Young sits third on nine-under, while Matt Fitzpatrick is tied fourth at eight-under. World number one Scottie Scheffler reaches four-under, with Rory McIlroy on one-over.

Aberg Leads The Players in Final Round

Aberg did not find rhythm early in round three, playing the first eight holes in one-over. A birdie on the ninth steadied the scorecard, and an eagle later in the round rebuilt momentum. A closing bogey on the 18th left Aberg signing for 71, yet still holding a commanding position.

Reflecting on the round, Aberg admitted the performance felt mixed in places but still effective under pressure. "Made a couple of mistakes early, hung in well, it was nice to get off with a birdie on nine, Aberg told Sky Sports." That moment turned the day around and helped protect the advantage built earlier in the week.

Aberg expanded on how demanding Sawgrass can become when the swing feels slightly off. "Didn't feel like I had my best stuff, but overall pleased with getting away with it and getting the ball in the hole. Sawgrass is about execution. If you hit the fairways and hit your shots, you'll get a lot of chances; if you don't, you'll get punished, and that's the kind of golf I really like. I love these big feel tournaments. [Sunday] will be a challenge, but looking forward to it."

Aberg’s strong position is built mainly on a stunning second-round 63, which included a record-equalling front nine. That score moved Aberg two clear at halfway and set the platform for Saturday’s round. Maintaining the lead without peak form on moving day underlines how solid the overall game has been this week.

Thorbjornsen’s 67 places the newcomer in the final group, chasing both a first PGA Tour victory and one of the calendar’s biggest titles. Young slipped after finding water from the 18th tee and carding a double-bogey to post level-par. Fitzpatrick also faltered with a double-bogey at the last, dropping into a share of fourth.

Scheffler’s bogey-free 67 continues recovery from a slow start to The Players Championship and keeps an outside chance alive from four-under. McIlroy, defending the title, could not build momentum and stayed at one-over after an even-par round. Both remain several shots behind Aberg and will likely need something low on Sunday.

The final round at TPC Sawgrass now centres on whether Aberg can convert the three-shot lead into a first major tour win. Thorbjornsen, Young and Fitzpatrick all remain close enough to challenge if Aberg slips. With Scheffler and McIlroy further back, the closing 18 holes promise a tense finish at The Players Championship.
