Aditi Ashok Creates History, Becomes First-Ever Indian Woman To Win Asian Games Golf Medal

Aditi Ashok scripted history on Sunday (October 1) at the ongoing Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, where she became the first-ever Indian woman to win a medal in golf in the continental games.

Indian women's golfers had never won a medal in Asian Games before Aditi won a silver medal with -17 at Par and a total of 271 in the individual women's golf event.

Aditi had led the table for the first three rounds, but dropped her position in the final round as Thailand's Arpichaya Yubol bagged gold with -19 at Par. South Korea's Hyunjo Yoo secured a bronze medal in the women's individual event with -16 at Par.

The other Indians competing in the women's individual event - Pranavi Urs and Avani Prashanth - finished 13th and tied 18th repectively with -4 at Par and +3 at Par.

On the other hand, the Indian women's team finished fourth in golf with -22 at Par. In the women's team event, Thailand won the gold, Korea bagged the silver and China secured the bronze.

In the men's event, Indian team of Anirban Lahiri, Shubhankar Sharma, SSP Chawrasia, Khalin Joshi are out of medal contention. The Indian team finished

In individual event, Lahiri finished tied 12th with -14 at Par, while Joshi, Cawrasia and Sharma finished tied 27th, 29th and 32nd respectively. Hong Kong's Taichi Kho won the gold, while Korea's Im Sung-jae won silver and Chinese Taipei's Hung Chien Yao won bronze.

Overall, in Asian Games, India have only two individual gold medals in golf that were won by Lakshman Singh (1982) and Shiv Kapur (2002). Aditi also becomes the second Indian to win an individual silver medal after Rajiv Mohta (1982).

Apart from the four individual medals, India has won the team medal three times - a gold in 1982 followed by silver in 2006 and 2010, the most recent team medal, at the Guangzhou Asian Games in China.
