AFI announces men's, women's team for GROE 2007-08

Mumbai, Oct 25 (UNI) The Indian team for the 1.08 million Dollar cash prize 'Standard Chartered Greatest Race on Earth 2007/08' series will consist of national marathon champion Satya Prakash, Mumbai marathon champion in Indian category Ram Singh Yadav, National Games 2007 marathon champion Bining Lynkhoi (2:17) and experienced marathon runner K C Ramu.

Announcing the team, Athletics Federation of India (AFI) associate vice president Adille Sumariwalla said, ''India has selected its strongest ever Marathon team for GROE 2007/08. It compromises Satya Prakash who will flag off the mission in Nairobi, Ram Singh Yadav will run the Singapore leg, Bining Lynkhoi will take part in home race at Mumbai and finally experienced marathon runner K C Ramu will finish the mission in Hong Kong.'' He Further said, ''For the first time, Indian women Marathon team will take part in the GROE series. The women's team will consist of 32-year-old Bhagwati, 3rd place winner of Delhi International Marathon 2006 who will take part in Nairobi, Leelamma Alphanso who will run in Singapore and Dhiraj Indresh will lead the Indian challenge at home run at Mumbai 20, while H Sangini Devi will take part in the Hong Kong Marathon.'' Team leader Rahul Pawar expressed confidence that the Indian team will do excellent performance in GROE 2007/08.

He said ''India is part of this unique Marathon relay competition since its inception and over the period we have developed thorough understanding of our rival competitors and race routes. This has helped us to plan better positioning of the runners. I am confident of my team's best ever performance this year.'' UNI
